– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 19. Why not celebrate King’s spirit of volunteerism by helping your child with one of these easy volunteer activities. Card-making for seniors and letters to troops Brighten someone’s day by having your child draw a picture and drop it off at a local nursing home or send it to someone in the military or a veteran through Operation Gratitude. While you’re at it, create your own letter of appreciation. Pick up trash at a park or along your block. A great learning experience for kids to learn where trash is supposed to go. Supervise children carefully during this activity and be sure everyone washes their hands afterward. If your child is big enough, you may want them to wear gloves. Donate clothes or toys Take your child shopping to pick out socks, hats and mittens for CCCP’s January clothing drive for Clothes for Kids. Or, help your child put together a box of used clothes or toys to donate to Goodwill or another charitable organization. Visit a “grandfriend” at a nursing home. Read stories, create crafts, sing a song and use your imagination. Parents will enjoy seeing the faces of both young and old light up.
